CYCLING – BMX: A triple Aussie threat in Sam Willoughby, Bodi Turner and Anthony Dean will line up on the start ramp on Thursday ready to fire in the men’s quarter-final runs.
The competition got underway in sizzling conditions on Wednesday with the time trial seeding runs – an all-out 35-second dash to the finish line of the 400m course at the Olympic BMX Centre in Deodoro.
Based on their time’s from the individual seeding run, riders have now been placed into one of four eight-rider heats for the action packed even runs. Riders will be allocated points as to their finishing place, with the top four riders with the lowest points from each heat after the quarter-final stage will progress to the semi-finals.
Willoughby is the favourite in heat three, while a less than ideal situation sees Dean and Turner placed together in heat four.
“It is really who gets to the first corner has a clean lap to the finish when racing comes,” said head coach Wade Bootes.
"It's all just about seeding yourself and the way it's all set out. I think we actually have good motos.
"They’ll step up on race day, they love the pressure and it's all about getting ready for battle and trying to win each war.
“It is according to plan so far. It's where we want to be.”
Action gets underway at 1.30pm in Rio (2.30am Friday AEST).
The women will return to the track on Friday for the semi-finals.
